Facebook and the Campus Shootings-

HERE

What an amazing leap for facebook, the social network for college students online. Myspace had the same reaction, but this article is specifically about facebook. I also picked this article in memory of anyone who passed during the horrible VA TECH shootings. What a disqusting image and portrayl of the american college. Getting back to the article, this investigative story on facebook, shows how the very popular online medium, has recently become a way for students to deal with the problems they are facing after the massacre. Students may post memorials, pictures, and prayers, while also checking and making sure that all classmates and friends are safe and accounted for.

This article really shows how this generationw ill continue to thrive and grow on new technologies. In my mind, facebook, which was once just some silly college network that connected freinds from dorms and high schools, to an enourmous leap on how who communicate during an emergency situation. Instead of tying up all the phone lines and driving around frantically, facebook has eliminated some of the choas, through cyber space. Facebook and its poists are fast, clear, and to the points. The prayers and pictures are amazing, and alot of love is shown towards the familys' of deceased.

What a great article. This article is the perfect example of how a small newspaper can dominate the national competition when the writters and editors try to think and write outside the box. By that, I mea that they focus on something in debt and not just the regular news stories. In this case 13 miners were trapped in a West Virginia coal mine. They all died and the story hit the air and papers the same day a woman in Kentucky was preparing to bury her husband. The woman burying her husband. was the wife of a miner that bled to death three days before the 13 men died. No news teams came to cover her story, even though he was brutally killed, and people should be aware of how he died, what she is going through, and the dangers of the job, besides what had haooened to the 13 men.

I also really like how the article goes even further to investigate miner realted deaths dating back to the 90's. It was so interesting how the article went into an investigation and an in dept look of the job dangers and lives of miners. More small news stations and firms should model around this type of research and story content.

scrutiny

The news, specifically CNN, has been experiencing harsher amounts of scrutiny, the latest being cover to the news station's website. The cover had a photograph pf a unique fish with a deign on its belly. The author seems to believe that CNN has crept away from what its purpose is. CNN has a history of coverage on the world, wars, economy, etc. The important things. The media has been accused of using too many stories which have no substance. The author questions why there are stories, cleary based on two unimportant facts, and hardly any on fixing social security and fighting overseas.

I can definitely see what the whole meaning of this article is. I agree that the news has been, too often, airing stories with no relevance or information, besides a shock factor. I saw the cover of a local newspaper that had a cover page feature story on how a Florida woman burned her dog house down. On the second page, there was an article on American deaths overseas, as well as, a must-know story on spinach and it' temporary danger. See where I'm going. The coverage of the infamous, Anna Nicole Smith, has been taking over so much time on the new, that there is barely any other stories with as much coverage. It sad. The news is for the real stuff. Let a marriage battle and a burnt doghouse stay in the tabloids!!!

Hispanic Magazine Circulation

LINK HERE

This article about hispanic magaizine circulation has a great twist that I havent's been finding in many other articles. The twist I speak of is the focus on a certain ethinicity of a magazine. Most magazines are sent after a certain demographic, but by far, in the ethniciy field you see the most african american demand. That is with ebony, black female, vibe, and source: all popular magazines aimed towrds an african american demographic. In this article it is the Hispanic ethnicity within magaizine circulation that is facing a problem. When the Hispanic magazines first began they thrived on the coverage of pop music star, Selena's, very tragic death, here in America. Since then, few dramatic events have occured, that focus on hispanic topics, to ensure a steady flow and demand of hispanic reader's. The article touches on the ideas that if something isn't done to gain some revenue quickly, alot of these magazines will have to close. I believe this is important because hispanics should want to keep a magazine geared towrds them in circulation, to promote an overall equal feeling for thier race, within the mass media.

A few things will be done to try and promote these magazines and help them sirculate more evenly by spreading them out through out cities. Special promotions with clubs in NYC and other big cities, along with free first issues, is an idea that might grab the hispanic attention that these editors are looking for. Many magazines geared towards other ethnicity's do well becysue they focus in on the proper ideas that the demographic demands. Maybe these magazines aren't covering the proper evenst and specials, and should take a look at reshaping their magazines, before they gove out free issues and try all these new promotions. I don't think that these magazines have enough security and trust by their readers, andI beleieve they need to stabalize this first before doing anythjing else.

Watch out or your email could get you!!

LINK TO THIS ARTICLE

The Better Business Bureau really took a hit to its stature, when this email scam went down on february 14th, this year. Thoasands of businesses across the United States were infected by a computer virus that appeared to be a regular Better Bussiness Bureau email. The virus opens when the computers accesses the link within the message. This cyber process triggers an address book, hibernating within a hacked computer in an advertising firm. That adress book releases the infected link and virus through the net and crashes any computer veiwing the email link. This could cost alot of money, or even worse, comletely ruin your computer. The Better Business Bureau has sent out an informative email requesting that recipients of the virus, to have knowledge concerning the fault and imposter by an unaffiliated source also warned future recipients to discard the message.

Very interesting article. It's scary how easy one can infect your computer, and for no apparent reason. I beleieve that this could have been a hit on both many companies across the US, but obviously more geared towrads the BBB(Better Business Bureau). Dealing with solving consumer complaints, a bitter feeling is usually involved when BBB and a company that encounters a problem. Maybe this virus was an angry management getting revenge for being exposed by the BBB, by messing up the intentions of the BBB. Further more, this is just another reason to get virus detetection, even if it costs you. Always better than having to buy a new PC.

Cell phones and Cancer

Cell phones and do they cause cancer.
This is a question that many have pondered. Followed by all of the questions, came many scientific studies and law suits. It was almost a fashion to sue cell phone manufacturers for hundreds of millions of dollars, with cancers and brain tumors, as the accusations. Just as with McCdonalds and Firestone, after one persons takes the money and runs, something must be done by the company. To reassure cell customers, an article on studies mentioned within, are done to prove that this popular media does not indeed cause brain tumors and cancer. It is proven that they emit a very low, and safe, amount of radion. Such a low amount that it is regulated by the FDA, just as the television, home phone, headphones, and radio.

I believe that articles and studies like this are very important to keep information up to date, and save companies with consumers, the proce of having to shell out extra and uninntended cash. People will take it to the next level with the legal process and how they rape it. What do you think??

Still on TV................

Sorry guys, by tommorow morning I will start creating links to my articles, but for this last time here is the address. Keep trying to add the link, but i cant get a hang of it. I will ask Blade tomm morning!!!
http://www.cnn.com/2007/SHOWBIZ/TV/02/12/apontv.wheeloffortune.ap/index.html

Wheel of Fortune has taken the mass media for a long 24 season run for its money. The show has opened up doors for the media and set an example of how media and culture can clash and dominate. What else can one say about a show with a 2 Ton wheel of cash prizes! A simple game show that we all used to play in 3rd grade science, evoloved into this sensational show that so many people view, every night. Not only the show, but the hosts, have become superstars and role models to some. Even though it is not as big as in the earlier years, it still has an estimated 46 million viewers across america each week. Amazing! Debuting in 1972, Wheel of Fortune, was the first to bank out on the idea of adults, playing a childish game, with huge prices and a super-hollywood shnazz factor.

What a great idea. The creators of this show must be fantastically exhausted with Wheel of Fortunes success. They have made it a part of pop culter, especially to the late 80's and early 90's. Who's grandma doesn't tune in every nite. Mine does! I love the idea of this show. It's so simple, yet the revenue is phenominal. This shows basic idea gets my brain running wild. Imagine how successful a broadcasted beer pong tornament with cheerleaders and cash prizes would become. What about Celebrity paintball or adult man-hunt. The ideas are endless. Until the next big craze............

KIDS, THE INTERNET, AND PORNOGRAPHY

http://www.cnn.com/2007/TECH/internet/02/05/kids.online.porn.ap/index.html
This article studies and spoke of how unwanted internet porn is reaching too many of our children’s viewing pleasures.

Some outrageous percentages are shown through out this article concerning teens accidentally coming across pornography while simply just using a search engine or surfing through websites with unwanted links. 42 percent of children between the ages of 10 and 17 admit they have viewed internet pornography within a 12 month span. Of that 42 %, 66% said they had viewed the pornography by accident. When asked about the situation most kids and teens just brush it off, saying that they see these images all the time. This article defines pornography as either naked people or people having sex. It seems that most of the youth here in America is so exposed that they have become desensitized to the mental effects of porn. The question then arises, is it a problem? The only problem defined in the article is that internet porn may skew what younger kids believe healthy sex is. A psychiatrist Sharon Hirsch, states that it may speed up teens involvement in sexual exploration or even lead to problems with sexual predators, but to me, that depends on the kid and how they are taught to act. Viewing some pornography and meeting up with a random stranger you meet online, are two totally different things. In my mind, its bad parenting if your children have no problem meeting some one they met on a porn page, because no one in their right mind would ever meet a strange person in that sense, unless they weren’t taught decency and common sense. What do you all think?

Newspaper Circulation-- will they die out??

After speaking of this in class, I was not aware of the ticking deadline newspapers had to revive their readers and in turn, circulation. In an article titled, "Growth Is Attainable, Sustainable -- Now!", found at-http://www.inma.org/2007-circsummit.cfm, it is explained on how sharp and presis the newspaper world has come to a hault. Each newspaper around the world is explaining some damging losses to their readers, circulation and needs. The planet has become to advanced and into high tech gadgets, to read their news on paper. How much easier is it to blog, chat, google, watch the nightly news or even simply glance at you palm piolet or phone to view the web. The 8th Annual INMA Circulation Summit will take place on March 8-9, and try and review and revise the newspaper world in order to appeal more to the reader. There, in San Diego, they will focus on the processes and systems of the newspaper industry and try and steal some of its readers back to the more traditional and respected way of getting news. Although dying, the newspaper industry seems very important to me, The languauge is for the reader, the news is mostly real and fact, and with that said, the web is always on half right in my mind.

mass media

Theis article was called "The risks of electronic communication"
I found it on this webpage- http://www.multicians.org/thvv/emailbad.html

This article is all about how we think electronic communication is so easy and fast, when in reality it can be dangerous and humiliating. By electronic communication the article means emals, IM's, blogging, chat rooms and over the web bulletin boards. This can all be accessable and used by anyone who wants to tamper, watch, or just simply log on. The article warns of what would happen if you post anything sarcastic, angry, emotional, or false. You could even begin to alter your reputation. Basically, what it comes down to, is that anything you ever write, post or blog, can be searched by anyone who wants to read it. This means, that if you attatch your name to something, your job, as example, could read it five years later, and what it says may alter their opinion of you. Maybe you got mad at work, so you entered a chat room, and steamed off some aif that anger. You never know who might mbe watching. As we brought up in class, myspace is a biggie for acting as big brother. When surfing the web and using electronic communication, wtach out what yu say, be careful, because you never know how its saved or interpreted,a s well as who is reading.
